Intergenerational Mobility in Educational Attainments

Abstract


This paper investigates intergenerational educational
mobility, a non-monetary measure of socio-economic status, in Pakistan.
Survey data, the Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurements
(PSLM-2012-13, is used for empirical analysis. Both contingency tables
and multinomial logit model are utilised. Results indicate strong
evidence of intergenerational linkages in educational attainments
between fathers and their sons. Although findings reveal somehow upward
mobility but opportunities are not equal for all. The chances for the
sons of less educated fathers are smaller than the chances for the sons
of high educated fathers to attain high levels of education. Further, a
higher mobility is found in urban regions as compared to the rural.
Results also reveal that rich are more likely to attain high levels of
education than poor. However, the sons of rich families in rural regions
are less likely to attain high levels of education as compared to the
sons of rich in urban regions. Our findings also support evidence in the
favour of child quality-quantity trade-off as shown by negative impacts
of family size on attainments of high levels of education. JEL
